Crimes Against Women in Matriarchal Societies

In collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh Police, our research study investigated gender-based violence in matriarchal tribal communities.

Arunachal Pradesh, home to over 36 indigenous tribes and unique customs such as bride price, provided a critical context to examine the socio-cultural roots of crimes against women. The study analysed the effects of modernisation, contrasted matriarchal and patriarchal systems of protection, and sought to inform inclusive, gender-just policy frameworks.

Aligned with the Centre’s mission, the research contributed to evidence-based legal reform, sustainable community development, and strengthened partnerships among law enforcement agencies, academia, and local stakeholders.
